On June 2, 2014, the Seattle City Council unanimously passed an ordinance that gradually increases the minimum wage in the city to $15 an hour, which will make it the highest in the nation. DWT employment attorneys Portia R. Moore, Harry Korrell, Jim Greenfield, and Paula Simon hosted a 45-minute interactive webinar, briefing, and Q&A on the City of Seattle's proposed change to the minimum wage. The webinar covered:

  • The stated purpose behind the ordinance; the timelines for enactment; and the key provisions applicable to small vs. large employers;
  • Which provisions of the ordinance, if enacted, will have the most significant impact on small and large employers with employees both inside and outside of Seattle city limits;
  • What legal challenges, if any, might exist to the ordinance as currently enacted; and what employer-side initiatives are likely to be brought;
  • The possibility that employee-side initiatives could nullify the Mayor's "compromise"
    package; and
  • What about the voters? How may the people first suspend then reject the minimum wage ordinance by referendum? What happens if and when any of the initiatives or charter amendments filed by Vote$15 pass?
