At Risk: The Freedom to Discuss Controversial Topics
It's “The next great First Amendment battle in the Supreme Court,” according to the New York Times. Author and filmmaker Robert J. Stevens, a pit bull enthusiast, is at the center of a case that pits controversial topics against the First Amendment. Davis Wright Tremaine attorneys Robert Corn-Revere and Jeffrey L. Fisher are helping defend him.

Upholding the Public Records Act
Prison Legal News (PLN) is a nonprofit publication that educates readers—including inmates, attorneys and educators—about prisoner rights and issues. When the magazine requested records relating to Washington Department of Corrections employees as part of its newsgathering process, it set off a conflict between the public’s right to access public records and the privacy concerns of individuals.

Team Obtains Justice for Renter
The housing market collapse has claimed many innocent victims, among them a renter in Alameda, Calif., whom we recently helped. Although she had always paid her rent on time, she was served with an eviction notice after her landlord defaulted on the property's mortgage. A team of attorneys in our San Francisco office heard of her situation and quickly went into action.

Helping Nonprofits Make Their Mark
Medical missions, senior housing, and HIV/AIDS fundraisers are among the projects being supported by associates in our Los Angeles office, who are helping these clients with tax-related work.

Boris Gaviria Receives the 2010 Davis Wright Tremaine Heart of Justice Award
Bellevue, Wash., associate Boris Gaviria received this year's Davis Wright Tremaine pro bono award, recently renamed the Heart of Justice Award. Throughout his tenure at Davis Wright Tremaine, Boris has shown a consistent commitment to pro bono service, and has represented the firm and our community as a leader in pro bono matters.

External Awards and Recognition
Mercy Corps, one of the world’s leading relief and development organizations, recognized Davis Wright Tremaine partner Robert D. Newell with its highest honor, the 2009 Humanitarian Hero Award. Newell provides essential pro bono legal services to the organization and inspires many of his colleagues at Davis Wright Tremaine to do the same.
