Jevan Hutson, CIPP/A/E/US, CIPT, CIPM, FIP, AIGP, is a member of the firm's privacy and security practice group. Jevan is a respected expert and thought leader on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) ethics, law, and policy. He has in-house experience advising major tech companies on incident response, generative AI policy, machine learning transparency, and other traditional and emerging concerns in privacy, cybersecurity, and AI law. He regularly publishes articles on the legal, ethical, and technical issues facing developers and purveyors of new technologies, leveraging deep knowledge in the space to serve his clients on strategies to evaluate and mitigate their biggest challenges.
Jevan helps a broad range of clients navigate the patchwork of national and global regulations that govern data collection, use, and disclosure, with particular focus on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) – as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA) – other state privacy laws, the FTC Act, facial recognition and biometrics, automated decision systems, and international and state breach notification laws. He has led incident response investigations, including breaches involving children's data and protected health information (PHI), and assisted in breach notifications and other regulatory obligations. Other areas of expertise include the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), HIPAA, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), and numerous state and federal consumer protection laws.
Before joining DWT, Jevan worked at other Seattle law firms and was embedded in legal affairs departments at Microsoft (privacy, safety, and regulatory affairs) and Meta (AI policy). He previously clerked at the FTC's Northwest Regional Office.
