John C. Nelson Jr.
Associate
John Nelson brings a wide range of telecommunications law, policy, and litigation experience to DWT's communications group, where he regularly helps clients overcome regulatory compliance issues and legal disputes involving a wide variety of wireline, wireless, and broadband topics. John advises and advocates on behalf of clients with matters involving FCC, state and federal courts, and state public utility commissions, with an emphasis on broadband infrastructure deployment, infrastructure funding, intercarrier compensation, telemarketing, and robocall mitigation.
John regularly counsels clients on the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) and other federal and state robocalling laws, including the FCC's implementation and enforcement of caller identification authentication requirements. Engrained in the subject on a near-daily basis, he uses his deep knowledge and understanding of the TCPA to provide brands, marketers, and platform providers with proactive and practical advice on how to successfully and lawfully engage in telephone and text message marketing and advises gateway providers and traditional carriers on how to implement fraudulent robocall mitigation strategies into their networks. He also frequently defends companies against alleged TCPA violations and robocalling investigations initiated by the FCC, FTC, and state attorneys general.
John's experience further includes assisting and advising clients on multibillion-dollar acquisitions of domestic and international telecommunications, cable, and submarine cable networks. Whether it's applying for and receiving transfer of control approval from state public utility commissions or the FCC or preparing responses to Team Telecom and CFIUS proceedings, John is prepared to go the distance to ensure his clients' transactions are completed efficiently, expeditiously, and in full compliance with federal and state regulatory frameworks.
