JULY 30, 2018 – Rachel Strom, a partner in the New York office of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, was named a Rising Star in the practice of Media & Entertainment law by Law360. She was one of just four lawyers nationwide to receive the honor.
Law360’s Rising Stars series recognizes “the top legal talent under 40,” according to the widely read online publication, which released its 2018 list of honorees today.
“We’re delighted to see Law360 affirm what our media clients know well: Rachel’s knowledge, insight, and dedication to service is extraordinary,” said Ambika Kumar Doran, co-chair of the media law practice at Davis Wright Tremaine. “Her team-player attitude also makes her a terrific colleague.”
Ms. Strom has played a central role in a large number of recent, high-profile media litigation matters. For example:
- Along with DWT partner Nathan Siegel, she represented Fox Broadcasting in one of the year’s most closely-watched right of publicity cases, in which Fox was sued for $30 million by Muhammad Ali Enterprises for allegedly using the boxer’s likeness without permission in a Super Bowl pre-game segment. The case recently settled.
- As the sole lawyer representing the media, she secured critical access for the public to a headline-making proceeding that the judge had been prepared to close in the case of Michael D. Cohen v. United States of America.
- She contributed significantly to briefing and argument preparation that led to three winning decisions in Adelson v. Harris et al., a $60 million defamation suit case that was “legally and procedurally complex like few cases are,” according to the New York district court judge who heard the case.
- On behalf of NBC, she won a motion to compel arbitration in a $30 million defamation suit arising from an episode of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.”
In addition to helping lead high-stakes litigation matters for traditional media clients, Strom provides pre-publication review for a host of important new media companies, such as Vice News, Refinery 29, and Gimlet Media.
Strom is intent on sharing her enthusiasm for legal practice with the next generation. For the past three years, she has co-taught a class on Media Law at Cardozo School of Law, where she earned her J.D. This summer she’ll be teaching a class called “A Million Lives in the Law” for high school students attending The New York Times’s NYC Summer Academy.
Strom and the other Rising Stars will be the subject of profiles in Law360 in the coming weeks.
