Bruce E. H. Johnson
The Davis Wright community mourns the loss of our beloved partner, Bruce Johnson, who passed away on August 20, 2024.
Bruce spent his entire career—nearly 50 years—at DWT. In every way, Bruce reflected the highest values of our firm. While clients and colleagues alike appreciated his brilliance and encyclopedia knowledge of media law, they also valued his kindness—to everyone, always. He selflessly devoted countless hours to mentoring and developing younger lawyers, including many of the partners leading our media practice today.
Bruce was instrumental in building DWT's industry-leading media practice. He was viewed for decades as one of the country's foremost First Amendment lawyers and was the author of a major treatise on media law. He also helped develop and often authored anti-SLAPP laws which protected free speech around the country.
Outside of the office, Bruce committed his time and energy to supporting Seattle's theater and music community, serving as a Board Member for the Seattle Opera and Pacific Musicworks (where he also served as President of the Board) and on the Board of Trustees of the Seattle Repertory Theater (where he also served as Chair and President of the Board).
As one DWT colleague remarked, "Bruce was singular." We miss him greatly, but are immensely grateful for the many years we shared with him.
Bruce was deeply devoted to his family and we extend our heartfelt condolences to Bruce's wife, children and grandchildren.
